Measurement 135

          4. Robin weighs 32 kg 273 g and Jenny weighs 29 kg 290 g. What is their total weight?
Find who is heavier and by how much?

          5. During a festival, Monika bought 10 kg 250 g of sweets and
distributed 7 kg 105 g among her friends. How much sweets
              was left with her?

        Measurement of Capacity

The quantity of a liquid in a container is the capacity or volume.

We measure the quantities of various liquids such as petrol, juice, milk, etc., with the
help of containers whose capacity is known.

        Units of Capacity

        Litre

The standard unit of capacity is litre which is denoted as ‘L‘.

        Millilitre

Millilitre is the smallest unit of capacity which is denoted as ‘mL’.

Commonly used Containers to Measure Capacity

Liquids like oil, petrol, milk, juice, etc. are measured using standard sized containers as
        shown below.

                5 L 1 L 500 mL 200 mL 100 mL 50 mL

        Conversion of Capacity

                                                      1 L = 1000 mL

To convert litres into millilitres, multiply the given number of litres by 1000.

To convert millilitres into litres, divide the number of millilitres by 1000.

               Let’s Attempt

        Example 1: Convert 5 L into mL. Example 2: Convert 6 L 250 mL into mL.

        Solution: 5 L = (5 × 1000) mL Solution: 6 L 250 mL = (6 × 1000) mL + 250 mL

                              = 5000 mL = 6000 mL + 250 mL = 6250 mL
