Example 3: Convert 9000 mL into L.
Solution: 9000 mL = (9000 ÷ 1000) L = 9 L
Example 4: Convert 5820 mL into L and mL.
Solution: 5820 mL = 5000 mL + 820 mL
= (5000 ÷ 1000) L + 820 mL = 5 L + 820 mL = 5 L 820 mL
Exercise 10.7
1. Fill the appropriate unit (L or mL) to show the capacity of:
(a) Water in a tank (b) A sachet of shampoo
(c) Nail paint in a bottle (d) Diesel filled in car
2. Convert the following into millilitres.
(a) 7 L (b) 2 L (c) 3 L 800 mL (d) 1 L 1 mL
(e) 5 L 350 mL (f) 6 L 50 mL (g) 9 L (h) 8 L 250 mL
3. Convert the following into litres and millilitres.
(a) 3000 mL (b) 6500 mL (c) 2379 mL (d) 5020 mL
(e) 8000 mL (f) 3605 mL (g) 1984 mL (h) 3580 mL
Addition and Subtraction of Capacities
To add or subtract given measures of capacities, firstly arrange them in columns of
L and mL, afterthat add or subtract them.
Let’s Attempt
L mL
Example 1: Add 82 L 873 mL and 19 L 245 mL. 1 1 1
Solution: Thus, 82 L 873 mL + 19 L 245 mL 8 2 8 7 3
+ 1 9 2 4 5
= 102 L 118 mL 1 0 2 1 1 8
Example 2: Subtract 11 L 250 mL from 34 L 10 mL. L mL
3 9 11
Solution: Thus, 34 L 010 mL – 11 L 250 mL 3 4 0 1 0
= 22 L 760 mL – 1 1 2 5 0
