Exercise 10.8
1. Add the following.
(a) L mL (b) L mL (c) L mL
1 6 9 0 0 2 1 0 1 9 3 1 2 5 6 7 3
+ 7 1 9 5 + 7 2 1 0 5 + 7 3 1 9 2
2. Subtract the following.
(a) L mL (b) L mL (c) L mL
4 7 8 9 5 9 3 2 5 0 1 9 4 0 5 0
– 2 9 3 4 7 – 1 7 5 3 5 – 7 8 2 3 7
3. Add 51 L 200 mL, 63 L and 7 L 999 mL.
4. Subtract 7 L 985 mL from 84 L 195 mL.
Word Problems
Let us learn how to solve word problems based on capacities using L and mL.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: A container holds 6 L 392 mL of oil. If 2 L 786 mL of oil is added to it to
make the container full, what is the capacity of the container?
Solution: Quantity of oil in container = 6 L 392 mL L mL
Quantity of oil added = 2 L 786 mL 1 1
6
Total quantity of oil = 6 L 392 mL + 2 L 786 mL + 2 3 9 2
7
8
6
Thus, the capacity of the container is 9 L 178 mL. 9 1 7 8
Example 2: The capacity of a diesel tank is 30 L. It already has 18 L 50 mL of diesel.
How much more diesel it can have?
Solution: Capacity of diesel tank = 30 L L mL
2 9 9 10
Quantity of diesel in tank = 18 L 50 mL 3 0 0 0 0
Quantity of diesel that can be added – 1 8 0 5 0
= 30 L – 18 L 50 mL 1 1 9 5 0
Thus, 11 L 950 mL more diesel can be put into the tank.
