5. Convert the following mixed fractions into improper fractions.
(a) 3 2 (b) 7 1 (c) 6 2 (d) 3 4 (e) 1 11
5 4 7 9 12
6. Convert the following improper fractions into mixed fractions.
18 42 37 54 112
(a) (b) (c) (d) (e)
7 9 6 5 11
Equivalent Fractions
Observe the three rectangles carefully and write the shaded parts as fractions.
1
2
Clearly, the shaded portion in each
2 1 2 4 rectangle represents the same part of the
4 2 = = 8 rectangle.
4
1 2 4
So, , and are equivalent fractions.
4 2 4 8
8
Equivalent fractions are the fractions that represent the same part of a whole or a collection.
Also, they are equal in value.
Finding Equivalent Fraction
To get a fraction equivalent to a given fraction, we multiply or divide the numerator and the
denominator of the given fraction by the same number (except zero).
3
For example, The equivalent fractions of are :
5
3 2 6 3 3 9 3 4 12
, ,
5 2 10 5 3 15 5 4 20
6 9 12
So, , , are equivalent fractions.
10 15 20
Checking Equivalent Fractions
Multiply the numerator of first fraction by denominator of second fraction and denominator
of first fraction by numerator of second fraction. If the products are equal, the fractions are
N N
equivalent. If 1 and 2 are two fractions and N × D = D × N , both of these fractions are
D 1 D 2 1 2 1 2
equivalent fractions. This method is called the cross multiplication method.
