        Types of Fractions
Now, let us learn different types of fractions.

        Like Fractions

Fractions with same denominator are called like fractions. 1 3
                         1
                                 3
For example, and are like fractions. 4 4
                         4 4
        Unlike Fractions
Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions. 1 1
                                 1
                         1
For example, and are unlike fractions. 4 8
                         4 8
        Proper Fractions

If the numerator of a fraction is less than its denominator, it is called a proper fraction. Therefore,
the value of a proper fraction is always less than 1.

                         1 2 3 4 8
For example, ,,,, , etc. are all proper fractions.
                         2 3 4 9 13
        Improper Fractions

Fractions with the numerator either equal to or greater than the denominator are called improper
fractions. Therefore, the value of an improper fraction is either equal to or greater than 1.
                         5 3 8
For example, ,, , etc. are all improper fractions.
                         5 2 3
        Unit Fractions

A proper fraction with ‘1’ as its numerator is called a unit fraction.

,, , etc. are all unit fractions.
        For example, 1 1 1
                         7 5 4
        Mixed Fractions

A combination of a whole part and a proper fraction is called a mixed fraction.

                                                            1 1 1
                                                  = 1 + 1 + = 2 + = 2 3 Challenge
                                                            3
                                                                     3
          3 3 1 I’m a fraction, not quite the same
          3  = 1        3  = 1          3                                          I’m  not  like  fractions,  we  denot
                                                                                   share the same name,
1 My denominator is not to blame
Thus, 2 3 is a mixed number. what am I?

                Whole part Proper fraction

                          1
                      1
        Similarly, 1 , 2 , 7 1 , etc. are all mixed fractions.
