Fractional Parts of a Collection
Ankit has a collection of 16 volleyballs. He was told
3
to sort out of this collection. How would he do it?
4
He needs to divide total 16 volleyballs into 4 equal parts. Thus,
each part has 4 volleyballs. If he wants to take three parts,
then he would write three-fourths part of the volleyballs.
3 3
Thus, of 16 16 12 volleyballs
4 4
We always use ‘×’ (multiply) in place of ‘of’.
Let’s Attempt
Example: Find the value of:
2 3 2 6
(a) of 15 balls (b) of ` 20 (c) of 25 bats (d) of 35 shirts
3 4 5 7
2 2 3 3
Solution: (a) of 15 balls = × 15 (b) of ` 20 = × 20
3 3 4 4
215× 30 320× 60
= = = 10 balls = = = ` 15
3 3 4 4
(c) 2 of 25 bats = 2 × 25 (d) 6 of 35 shirts = 6 × 35
5 5 7 7
225× 50 635× 210
= = = 10 bats = = = 30 shirts
5 5 7 7
