 An ambiguous message may create misunderstanding.

            Non-verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication is when information is exchanged without using spoken or written words.
Thus, non-verbal communication is the process of communication through wordless messages.
Let us discuss various non-verbal communication methods.
 Body movements such as hand gestures, nodding, shaking the head, arm-crossing, and leg-crossing refl ect
the feelings and attitude. For example: nodding with a smile conveys you are agreeable to the idea.
 Eye contact communicates the level of involvement, interest and warmth. It determines the level of trust
and trustworthiness. Staring and blinking are essential non-verbal behaviours. Looking at another person
can indicate a range of emotions including hostility, interest and attraction. Normal steady eye contact is
often perceived as a sign that a person is telling the truth and is trustworthy.
 Posture is the way we stand or sit, whether arms are crossed, and so on. A gesture is any physical movement
that helps to express an idea, opinion or emotion. For example, talking to someone with arms crossed may
                 indicate a rigid attitude.
 Gestures are the deliberate body movements that help in communication. For example, waving the hand
means saying good bye or biting the nails indicate you are nervous.

                                                                Body
                                           Physiological Movements
                                            Changes Eye Contact

                                           Facial
                                                            Non-Verbal Posture
                                         Expressions Communication

                                             Proxemic Gestures
                                                               Para-
                                                              Language

                                                      Non-verbal Communication
 Para-language is the language of gestures, expressions, postures, voice tone, pausing, volume, infl ection,
pitch and speech. For example, a high-pitch voice tone may indicate aggressiveness.
 Proxemic is when a person is standing too close and entering your space. The study of personal space and
closeness is called proxemics. Every culture has different levels of physical closeness. We can use physical
space to communicate different non-verbal messages, like signals of intimacy, affection, aggression or
                 dominance.
 Facial expressions show eight basic human emotions-anger, contempt, playfulness, disgust, fear, happiness
sadness and surprise. For example, a wink may show that you are being playful and not serious.
 Physiological changes are often associated with anxiety and discomfort. While communicating with others
if someone is sweating, blinking, shaking, fl aring nostrils, trembling chin, blanching, cold clammy skin,
blushing, moisture in eyes, fl ushing, swallowing, breathing heavily, etc., then all these are expressions of
                 physiological changes.

While delivering a presentation in the class, Rohan covered his arms while answering some
questions from the audience. Which kind of non-verbal communication does he reflect?
