Introduction to Communication
Communication is the act of sharing information between two individuals or within a group to reach a common
understanding. Communication skills are needed to speak and write, properly and clearly. Being able to
communicate effectively perhaps is the most important of all life skills. It enables us to pass information to other
people and to understand what is said to us.

Good reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are essential for good communication. A person who is able
to speak with clarity of thoughts, uses good vocabulary and is able to captivate the audience with right words,
is generally said to be an effective speaker. Similarly, a person who is able to use written words effi ciently and
is able to communicate the ideas to the readers is said to be an effective writer.
Studying a language is not effective until you are able to read, write, speak and listen to it properly. The fi rst
language that a child learns is the one his family speaks. It is called the mother tongue. He is exposed to it since
childhood and gets profi cient in it without any effort. Speaking more than one language helps in communicating
well with people around the world and increases the scope of communication. Learning English is quite
helpful as it is a global language. In the present time, a thorough knowledge of English language, with good
communication skills is very important for getting employed.
The word ‘communication’ comes
from the Latin word ‘communicare’
that means ‘to share’.
Importance of Communication
Communication is so important in the present time due to the following reasons:
Source of Information: Communication acts as a source of information for employees/students in decision-
making process as it helps identifying and assessing alternative course of actions.
Knowledge and Motivation: Communication promotes motivation by informing and clarifying the
employees/students about the task to be done, the manner in which they are supposed to perform the task
and how to improve their performance if it is not up to the mark.
Altering Attitudes: Communication plays a crucial role in altering an individual’s attitudes. A well
informed individual will have better attitude than a less-informed individual. Organizational magazines,
meetings and various other forms of communication help in moulding employee’s/student’s attitude.
