4. The Harvest Scene
The harvest time begins just after the spring season is over. The farmers eagerly look
forward to the harvest time. To them, it is a harvest fair. The fields are full of golden
wheat and ripe barley. Men go out to the fields, with sickles in their hands. They cut
yellow stalks of wheat. They are very busy in this season. Women bring meals for
menfolk in the fields. Children are engaged in other duties. The harvest time is a time
of joy and happiness for the farmers. They feel happy to get the farm produce as a
reward for their hard labour.
5. A Street Hawker
A street hawker is a very common figure. He is seen at street corners, at the squares,
near schools, and cinemas. He often carries a big, stand, and a bell. He rings the bell to
attract customers. He sells all sorts of things. He sells clips, ribbons, hankies, clothes,
sweetmeats and toys. He sells his goods very cleverly and in a shrewd manner. He
cries at the top of his voice. He sometimes sings verses, too. The children feel happy
at his very sight.
6. A Flood
The monsoons in India bring rains, and the rains in turn bring prosperity. The rains are
a boon if they are in time. However, sometimes the rains are heavy and continuous
and cause a lot of destruction. The rivers overflow their banks and are in spate. Floods
cause heavy damage to the crops. They destroy and cause great hardships to the
people who are rendered homeless. They cut off villages and cities. They are a source
of great suffering and hardship. They take heavy toll of lives: both human and animal.
The animals are washed away. Diseases like cholera spread in the village. Both the
government and individuals come to the help of flood-hit people.
