18 18            Comprehension










             A  reading  comprehension  is  an  unseen  passage/  poem  which  you  read  for
             the first time. It is used to assess the reading skills of the students. A variety of

             questions are set on it. The passages can vary in genre, length and complexity.

             How to answer the questions on a given passage.

               1.  Read the passage carefully and try to understand its sense.

               2.  Read each question, understand it, and locate the answers in the passage.

               3.  Underline the sentences that contain the answers to the given question and
                   write the answers in your own words.

               4.  The answer to each question should be brief and to the point.

               5.  Finally, revise what you have written.





                                                  Solved Example


          Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

          Abdul Hamid of Four Grenadiers along with his company was waiting to face the
          Pakistani army. He was sitting in a jeep. He had a special gun. The Patton tanks were

          not very far from him. He could hit the tanks with his gun if he wanted to. He was a
          good shooter. But he waited because he wanted to hit each tank with his shot. He did

          not want to waste his shots. These Pakistani tanks were very powerful and dangerous.
          They were coming nearer and nearer. They were firing continuously. Abdul Hamid

          marched forward. He saw a Pakistani tank. He turned his gun and fired a shot. Lo!
          there goes the tank in flames. It caught fire. His soldiers were very happy.

            1.  Who was waiting to face the Pakistani army?

            2.  Where was Abdul Hamid sitting?

            3.  Why did Abdul Hamid wait for the Pakistani tanks to come near?

            4.  Were the Patton tanks very far from Abdul Hamid?
