                                                                   Warm Up

              ● Division is repeated subtraction of a number.
              ● It is represented by the symbol ‘÷ ’.
              ● Division also means equal sharing.
              ● In 35 ÷ 7 = 5, Dividend = 35, Divisor = 7 and Quotient = 5.

              ● The dividend is always greater than the divisor and the quotient.

              ● The divisor is always greater than the remainder.

            Division

“Equal sharing or equal grouping is known as division.”

            Division as Equal Sharing

How can you distribute 15 apples equally among 5 friends? Let the 5 friends be A, B, C,
            D and E.

                         A B C D E

Give one apple to each friend fi rst. Now, we are left with 10 apples so we distribute one
more apple to each. Now, we are left with 5 apples. So we distribute one more apple to
            each of them.

                   15 – 5 = 10
                                     Hence, 15 ÷ 5 = 3
                   10 – 5 = 5
Thus, 15 divided by 5 is equal to 3.
                   5 – 5 = 0
