P. 83
Division 81
When we write in long division form, we represent it as:
2 Quotient 8 16 2 Quotient
Divisor 8 16 Dividend or Divisor Dividend
We use long division for such problems that need more than one step as it is convenient.
Let us divide 24 by 2.
T O
Step 1: Write 24 in expanded form.
1
24 = 2 tens + 4 ones 2 2 4
Step 2: Divide 2 tens by 2. – 2

2 tens ÷ 2 = 1 ten 0
Write 1 as quotient and 2 under tens column and subtract.
Step 3: Divide 4 ones by 2.
T O
Since 2 × 2 = 4 1 2
4 ÷ 2 = 2 2 2 4
Write 2 as quotient and 4 under ones column and subtract. – 2
0 4
Now, remainder is zero.
– 4
Hence, 24 ÷ 2 = 12 0
Checking Division
1 2
× 2 If Quotient × Divisor = Dividend,
2 4 your answer is correct.
Thus, 12 × 2 = 24. Hence, answer is correct.
