Checking Division
To check the answer, multiply the quotient by the divisor and then add the remainder to
it. If the dividend is obtained, the answer is correct.
Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder
Let's Try
Example 1: Divide 57 by 8 and check your answer.
7
Solution: Here, dividend = 57 8 5 7

Divisor = 8 Quotient = 7 Remainder = 1 –5 6
1
Check: Divisor × Quotient + Remainder
= 8 × 7 + 1 = 56 + 1 = 57 = Dividend
Thus, answer is correct.
Example 2: Divide 273 by 2 and check your answer. H T O
Solution: Here, dividend = 273 1 3 6
2 2 7 3
Divisor = 2 Quotient = 136 Remainder = 1 –2
Check: Divisor × Quotient + Remainder 0 7
– 6
= 2 × 136 + 1 = 272 + 1 = 273 = Dividend 1 3
Thus, answer is correct. 1 2
