             Let's Try

Example 1: Ankan has 72 metres of rope. He cuts it into 8 equal pieces. What is the

                         length of each piece?
Solution: Total length of rope = 72 metres 9

                         Number of pieces = 8 8 7 2
                                                                                               – 7 2
                         Length of each piece = 72 ÷ 8 = 9 0

Hence, each piece is of 9 metres.

Example 2: During a Help Week, 8 students were told to arrange 816 books in the
shelves of library. If each student arranged equal number of books, how

many books were arranged by each of them?
                                                                                                          1 0 2
Solution: Total number of books = 816
                                                                                                     8 8 1 6
                          Number of students = 8
                                                                                                        – 8
Number of books arranged by 0 1 6
                          each student = 816 ÷ 8 = 102 –1 6

Hence, each student arranged 102 books 0
                          during the Help Week.

Example 3: A factory produces 89 butt ons in an hour. If these butt ons are packed in

4 boxes with equal number, how many butt ons are packed in each box?
How many butt ons are left (if any)?
                                                                                                            2 2
Solution: Number of butt ons produced = 89
                                                                                                        4 8 9
                          Number of boxes = 4 – 8

                          Number of butt ons in each box = 89 ÷ 4 = 22 0 9
                          and since remainder is 1 – 8

Thus, 1 butt on will be left . 1
