● When a fraction is formed, the whole is divided into equal size. For example, to take 1/4 of
a pizza it is divided into 4 equal parts.
Fraction
When we divide anything into equal parts, each part is called a fraction of the whole.

One-half
When an object is divided into two
equal parts, then each part is called
one-half of the whole.
In the fi gures above each shaded part is one-half and is read as ‘one by two’ or ‘one-half’
or ‘one out of two’. Even the unshaded part also represents 1 or one-half as both are
equal. 2

R
One-half or 1/2 means equal parts. The given circle is distributed
into two parts but both parts are not equal. Hence, shaded and unshaded
part is not equal to one-half.
Only equal parts make a fraction. A whole
object or shape should be divided into equal
parts to form fractions. The parts in the
following pictures do not make fractions.
