One-third and Two-thirds
When an object is divided into three
equal parts, then each part is called
one-third of the whole.

Here, each shaded part represents or ‘one-third’ or ‘1 by 3’ or ‘1 out of 3’ and is read

as one by three. Also, unshaded part in each case represents two-thirds as it is two parts
of three parts (or a whole).

We express it as or two-thirds.

One-fourth and three-fourths
When an object is divided into four
equal parts, then each part is called
one-fourth (or quarter) of the whole.

In the above fi gures each shaded part represents one-fourth or .

It is read as 'one by four' or '1 out of 4'.
The unshaded part is 3 parts out of 4 equal parts and hence it is represented as 3 or
4
three fourths of the whole.
Thus, to write fractions, we write the selected part on the top as numerator and total
parts (or whole) as the denominator.
