            Reading of Fraction

Look at the following fi gure.

Count the number of shaded parts. It is 3.

Count the total number of parts. It is 10.

                                                  Number of shaded parts 3
The fraction of shaded part = = (Three-tenths)
                                                    Total number of parts 10

            Fractions as Collections

Ruby has a collection of 6 balloons. She gave 3 to

her friend Sonam. What fraction of balloons did

            she give?
Let’s see how to answer this.

Ruby has given 3 balloons and she is left with 3 balloons. Thus, she gave
6 ÷ 3 = 2 or one half of the balloons from her collection.

Thus, Fraction of balloons given = 1
                                                       2
Similarly, one half of a collection of 12 balls
              1
            = of 12 = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 balls
              2
One half of a collection of 18 oranges
              1
            = of 18 = 18 ÷ 2 = 9 oranges
              2
