Division 77

        Dividend is the number to be divided. 15 ÷ 5 = 3

Divisor is the number by which we divide.
                                                                                          Dividend
Quotient is the answer obtained on division. Divisor

                                                                                                         Quotient
        Division as Repeated Subtraction

Division is also done using the concept of subtraction.

Let us divide 12 by 2

               12 ÷ 2 Remember!emember!emember!

                12 – 2 = 10  To show division as repeated

                10 – 2 = 8 subtraction, subtract until you
                  8 – 2 = 6 6 times get 0 fi nally.

                  6 – 2 = 4
                  4 – 2 = 2 As we subtracted 2 from 12, six times to get 0.

                  2 – 2 = 0 Hence, 12 ÷ 2 = 6.

        Division on Number Line

We can divide on number line also. To divide 20 by 5 on a number line, start from 20.
Take jumps of 5 in backward direction, to reach 0. Count the jumps and get the answer.

                                                   20 ÷ 5 = 4

1 Divide by equal grouping. One is done for you.
