Addition and Subtraction of Lengths
To add or subtract the given lengths, we arrange them in two columns of ‘m’ and ‘cm’ or
‘km’ and ‘m‘ and then add or subtract them.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Add 19 m 35 cm and 43 m 7 cm. 1 m 1 cm
Solution: Thus, 19 m 35 cm + 43 m 7 cm = 62 m 42 cm 1 9 3 5
+ 4 3 0 7
Example 2: Add 4 km 50 m and 2 km 387 m. 6 2 4 2
Solution: Thus, 4 km 50 m + 2 km 387 m Fact-o-meter
= 6 km 437 m km m 100 cm = 1 m
1 So, in addition of m and cm,
4 0 5 0 we use 7 cm as 07 cm.
+ 2 3 8 7
6 4 3 7
Example 3: Subtract 54 m 19 cm from 70 m 20 cm. m cm
Solution: Thus, 6 10 1 10
0
7
0
2
70 m 20 cm – 54 m 19 cm – 5 4 1 9
= 16 m 1 cm 1 6 0 1
Example 4: Subtract 27 km from 100 km 60 m. km m
0
9
Solution: Thus, 1 0 10 0 6 0
0
100 km 60 m – 27 km – 2 7 0 0 0
= 73 km 60 m 0 7 3 0 6 0
Exercise 10.2
1. Add the following.
(a) (b) (c)
m cm m cm m cm
3 5 0 7 1 6 3 5 4 8 9 5
+ 5 3 1 9 + 2 9 5 3 + 1 9 3 2
(d) km m (e) (f)
1 9 1 0 0 km m km m
+ 5 7 2 5 2 5 0 2 5 6 6 0 0
+ 4 1 7 5 + 5 1 7 9
