Kilometre
Kilometre is bigger unit of length and is denoted as ‘km’. Distance between two villages,
towns or cities are measured in kilometres (km).
Tools for Measuring Length
The description of tools are as follows:
To measure the length of an object we keep the tip of the object at 0 (zero) mark and
find the mark on tool that matches with the end point of the object. This gives the length
of the object.
Measuring tape: It is used to measure lengths in day-to-
day life. Carpenters, tailors, etc., all use measuring tapes
to measure the length.
Metre rod: When we visit a shop to buy ribbons, fabrics etc., the shopkeeper uses
a rod called metre rod to measure the length.

To convert centimetres into metres, divide the number of centimetres by 100.
To convert kilometres into metres, multiply the number of kilometres by 1000.
To convert metres into kilometres, divide the number of metres by 1000.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Convert 7 m and 9 m into cm. Fact-o-meter
Solution: 7 m = (7 × 100) cm = 700 cm To convert m and cm into cm,
multiply the number of metres by
9 m = (9 × 100) cm = 900 cm 100 and then add it to the number
of cm.
Example 2: Convert 8 m 72 cm into cm. To convert km and m into m,
multiply the number of kilometres
Solution: 8 m 72 cm = (8 × 100) cm + 72 cm by 1000 and then add it to the
= 800 cm + 72 cm = 872 cm number of metres.
