Indentation

Indentation is the process of setting text at a specified

position from the page margins. Word 2019 offers four

indentation options to format a paragraph.

Components Functions

It marks the distance of all lines in a paragraph from the left
Left Indentation
page margin.

It marks the position of all lines in a paragraph from the right
Right Indentation
page margin.
First Line It marks the position of the first line of a paragraph from the left

Indentation page margin, keeping all other lines set with the left margin.

Hanging It marks the position of all lines of a paragraph, except the first
Indentation line, from the left page margin.

To set indentation for a paragraph:

1. Position the cursor in the paragraph you want
to indent.
2. On the Home tab, click the dialog box launcher
button in the Paragraph group.

The Paragraph dialog box opens.
3. In the Indentation section on the Indents and

Spacing tab:
• Specify the values in the Left and Right boxes
to set the left and right indents respectively
for the paragraph.
• Select the First line or Hanging 4

option from the Special drop-
down list and specify a desired
value in the By box.
The Preview section displays a
sample of the specified indents.

4. Click the OK button.
Word applies the indentation to
the selected text.
