Identify the Factors that Help in Building Self-confi dence

Self-confi dence is the belief we have in our strengths and abilities. If a hardworking, charming, intelligent,
talented person lacks confi dence and avoids taking initiative, then it may be diffi cult for him to come into
limelight and people may overlook the talent of that person.
We can build self-confi dence when we believe in our strength to succeed in anything we do in life. People who
are confi dent believe that they can handle any given situation and emerge winners.

Factors that Help in Building Self-confidence
There are mainly three factors that help in building self-confi dence. They are social, cultural and physical factors.
            Let’s learn about them.

            Social Factors

Man is a social animal. We cannot live alone; that is why we live in a
society among the people of our own kind. Our society comprises
our family, friends, relatives, neighbourhood, school, etc. We want
people to like us. Social factors affect our lifestyle, our way of
thinking and our self-confi dence. To improve our social skills, we
have to invest time. Also, we interact with people around us and
observe them keenly. We can observe the interactions between people at our home and other places around us
like school or neighborhood. Through understanding of these interactions, we can work upon our social
behaviour and improve our confi dence.

                                                        Cultural Factors

Culture refers to the social behavior and norms found in human
societies. Culture is the ‘way of life’ for a group of people. It is
the way people do things. Different groups may have different
cultures. A culture is passed on to the next generation by learning
and practice. It forms the base of a vibrant society is and expressed
in many ways such as, telling stories, celebrating and entertaining
ourselves. Religion, language, moral value, tradition, dresses, food, customs, festivals, climate, etc. form part of
a society’s cultural heritage. Adaptations in a society with various cultural factors give rise to new skills, explore
creative ideas, increase social interaction and well being of individuals and boost self-confi dence. Culture
infl uences a child’s development and behaviour. Children growing in different cultures receive specifi c inputs
from their environment and cultivate values based on them.

            Physical Factors

Keeping physically fi t has a positive impact on self-confi dence. Exercise is a
powerful tool in a person’s quest to self-confi dence. Regular exercise releases
happy hormones, relaxes mental stress and allows body and mind to work
properly. This brings a kind of happy state of mind wherein we see ourselves
in a more positive light. When we exercise regularly, we become physically
fi t and at the same time feel motivated to act in the ways that build our self-
            confi dence.
