Be Brief: The communication should be clear but brief. Use fewer but effective words and avoid repetition.
Keep only one objective in mind that you are writing to express and not to impress.
Be Clear: Use simple language which should be clear to a normal reader and not to a literary genius only.
The best strategy is to put yourself in the reader’s place and frame your sentences. If you are using any
acronyms, clarify them and remember that interpretations are subjective.
Be Persuasive: Good writing is persuasive writing. Your goal is to convince the other party to take some
action.
Be Positive: Use positive words and expressions to downplay the negatives in your writing.
Improving Writing Skills
Writing skill is the ability to write sentences and paragraphs correctly with proper grammar, spellings
and punctuation. For good writing skills, the language is the primary tool and the writer should have a
fundamental grasp of how to use it. Writing is a way towards self-improvement and our ability to communicate.
We can improve writing skills by remembering the following points:
Practice Writing on a Regular Basis: Whether you use a notebook or compose your ideas on a computer,
it is essential that you write something every day.
Find a Place that is Well-suited for Writing: It may be a coffee shop, a library, or your study room.
Monitor your Progress: Date entries and keep your work well organized. By doing this, you commit
yourself to self-improvement.
Basic Components of English Grammar
To communicate well, we must have a good command over the language in which we are communicating. At
the same time, we must take care that there are no grammatical errors in writing. To improve our writing skills,
we shall study about the basic components of English grammar and how they should be used effectively.
Punctuation
Punctuation is a set of marks that are used in writing. They make a sentence easier to understand. Punctuation
brings a clear meaning to our writing.
The following are the most common punctuation marks in the English language:
Full Stop (.)
We use a full stop at the end of a sentence or a command.
For example:
Wait for me till I return. Honesty is the best policy.
We use a full stop to mark abbreviations.
For example:
Rohan will reach at 5:00 p.m.
Question Mark (?)
We use a question mark at the end of an interrogative sentence.
For example:
Where are you? Did you complete your homework?
Exclamation Mark (!)
We use an exclamation mark at the end of an exclamatory word or a sentence.
For example:
What a pleasant surprise!
Alas! He could not qualify the interview.
