Application of IT in ITeS Industry

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to technologies that provide access to information
through telecommunication networks. For example, we use mobile devices to perform the tasks of our daily life.
ICT has become one of the basic requirements of the modern society that affects every sphere of our life such
as at home, in offi ces, in shops, in railways, in hospitals and banks, in education and research, in manufacturing
and healthcare. In a nutshell, the Information Technology enabled Services (ITeS) sector has not only changed
the way the world looks at our country, but it has also made signifi cant contributions to the Indian economy.

Introduction to Information Technology
IT is any computer based tool used to work with information and support the information processing needs
of an organisation or individual. It includes all types of technology such as computer hardware and software
technology used for creating, storing, and transferring information. Computer takes data as input, processes it
and produces the result as output. Data can be any character, text, words, number, pictures, sound, video, etc.
When it is arranged in some order, then it become meaningful to us. This meaningful data is called Information.
Computers and information systems are an essential part of every business today. Every business needs to
invest in technology to compete. IT delivers multiple benefi ts to businesses, such as it helps in reaching more
potential customers, developing business relationships with potential customers, streamlining operations,
providing better service to customers, supporting better relationships with key partners, reducing costs,
improving effi ciency, maximising profi t, minimising waste, and allowing customers to better guide the business.

Information Technology enabled Services (ITeS)

Information Technology services that enable business to improve their quality of
services are Information Technology enabled Services (ITeS). These services are
also known as web-enabled services or remote services and include a wide range
of operations to improve the effi ciency of processes in an organisation as they
provide a wide range of career options that include opportunities in offi ces like
call centres, medical billing, coding, medical transcription, legal databases, back-
offi ce operations, content development, payrolls, logistics management, revenue
claims processing, GIS (Geographical Information System), web services, Human
Resource (HR) services, etc. Therefore, ITeS can be defi ned as a type of outsource
service that involves the use of IT.

BPO Services
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services means performing business operations through a third party
professional service provider. It is one of the fastest growing segments of the ITeS industry that plays a very
useful role in optimising business performance. The BPO industry is highly organised and hence various kinds
of jobs are being outsourced to India. Some of the BPO services are as follows:
