Example 1: Divide 421 by 5 and write the divisor, quotient and remainder.
Solution: Step 1: Start at hundreds place. Since 4 < 5, the division is not possible.
Regroup 4 hundreds as 40 tens and add it to 2 tens at tens place.
Now, we have 42 tens as the dividend. Since 42 > 5. Division is
possible.
42 tens ÷ 5, gives 8 tens as quotient and 2 tens as remainder.
Write the quotient in tens column.
Step 2: Bring down the next digit of dividend. 2 tens and 1 one make
21 ones.
21 > 5, so, the division is possible. H T O
21 ones ÷ 5, gives 4 ones as quotient and 1 one 8 4

Thus, Quotient = 84 and Remainder = 1 –2 0
