Division 85

                                                   Word Problems

Let us learn how to solve word problems on division with the help of some examples.

              Let’s Attempt

Example 1: Ankur has 72 metres of rope. He cuts it into 8 equal pieces. What is the

                         length of each piece?

Solution: Total length of rope = 72 metres 9

                         Number of pieces = 8 8 7 2
                                                                                                          –7 2
                         Length of each piece = 72 ÷ 8 = 9 0

Thus, each piece is of 9 metres.

Example 2: Pallavi distributed 125 toffees among 5 of her friends equally. Find the

                         share of each friend.
                                                                                                           2 5
        Solution: Total toffees = 125 5 1 2 5
                                                                                                     –1 0
                         Number of friends = 5 2 5

                         Share of each friend = 125 ÷ 5 = 25 –2 5
                                                                                                               0
Thus, the share of each friend is 25 toffees.

Example 3: A factory produces 89 buttons in an hour. If these buttons are packed in

4 boxes with equal number, how many buttons are packed in each box?
How many buttons are left (if any)?
                                                                                                           2 2
        Solution: Number of buttons produced = 89 4 8 9

                         Number of boxes = 4 –8
                                                                                                           0 9
                          Number of buttons in each box = 89 ÷ 4 = 22 – 8

and since remainder is 1. 1

Thus, 1 button will be left.
