When we subtract 1 from a number, the difference is the predecessor of the given
               number.
               For example, 1677 – 1 = 1676; 2954 – 1 = 2953

In subtraction, the order of numbers is very important. We always subtract small
               number from the big number.

        Checking Subtraction Using Addition

We can easily check the subtraction by adding the difference to the subtrahend. If the
sum is equal to the minuend, then the subtraction is correct.

Let us subtract 2623 from 4532 and check our answer.
                       Subtraction Checking the answer

                       Th H T O Th H T O
                        3 15 2 12 1 1
                        4 5 3 2 Minuend 1 9 0 9
                    – 2 6 2 3 Subtrahend + 2 6 2 3
                        1 9 0 9 Difference 4 5 3 2

We subtract 2623 from 4532 and we get the difference as 1909.
When we add 1909 and 2623, we get the sum as 4532 (minuend)
Thus, the answer for subtraction is correct.

                                                   Exercise 4.5
