Subtraction 47
Step 3: Subtract the hundreds.
As we cannot subtract 9 hundreds from 8 hundreds, we borrow
1 thousand from thousands column. Th H T O
1 thousand + 8 hundreds 6 18 6 13
= 10 hundreds + 8 hundreds = 18 hundreds 7 8 7 3
Now, 18 hundreds – 9 hundreds = 9 hundreds – 4 9 6 8
Write 9 under hundreds column. 9 0 5
Step 4: Subtract the thousands.
In thousands column, 6 thousands are left Th H T O
after borrowing. 6 18 6 13
Now, 6 thousands – 4 thousands 7 8 7 3
= 2 thousands – 4 9 6 8
Write 2 under thousands column. 2 9 0 5
Thus, 7873 – 4968 = 2905
Exercise 4.4
1. Find the difference.
(a) Th H T O (b) Th H T O (c) Th H T O
1 3 8 7 5 4 7 5 7 9 8 5
– 1 2 3 8 – 2 1 7 6 – 2 4 4 7
2. Write in columns and find the difference.
(a) 2618 and 1539 (b) 5746 and 2459 (c) 8067 and 6175
(d) 6785 and 4837 (e) 3876 and 4685 (f) 5318 and 7609
Properties of Subtraction
When we subtract 0 from any number, the difference is the number itself.
For example, 693 – 0 = 693; 2918 – 0 = 2918
When we subtract a number from itself, the difference is always zero.
For example, 734 – 734 = 0; 2149 – 2149 = 0
