Subtraction of 4-digit Numbers
Subtraction without Regrouping
Subtraction of 4-digit numbers is not different from the subtraction of 3-digit numbers.
Only here we got to subtract one extra pair of digits at the thousands place. Arrange the
numbers in columns as per their place values. Take care to write the greater number on
the top and then subtract.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Subtract 6342 from 8573.
Solution: Here, 8573 > 6342
Arrange the numbers in columns and then follow these steps:
Step 1: Subtract the ones. Th H T O
8 5 7 3
3 ones – 2 ones = 1 one – 6 3 4 2
Write 1 under ones column. 1
Step 2: Subtract the tens. Th H T O
7 tens – 4 tens = 3 tens 8 5 7 3
Write 3 under tens column. – 6 3 4 2
3 1
Step 3: Subtract the hundreds.
5 hundreds – 3 hundreds = 2 hundreds Th H T O
8 5 7 3
Write 2 under hundreds column. – 6 3 4 2
2 3 1
Step 4: Subtract the thousands.
8 thousands – 6 thousands = 2 thousands Th H T O
8 5 7 3
Write 2 under thousands column. – 6 3 4 2
Thus, 8573 – 6342 = 2231 2 2 3 1
