Subtraction 43
Subtraction
Subtraction means taking away one number from another number. When we subtract a
smaller number from larger number, the answer, we get, is called the difference.
Subtraction of 3-digit Numbers H T O
While subtracting, always write the larger 7 4 5 Minuend
number on the top. First subtract ones, next – 2 3 5 Subtrahend
tens and then hundreds. 5 1 0 Difference
Subtraction without Regrouping
When each digit of minuend is greater than its corresponding digit of subtrahend, we
subtract without regrouping.
Let us subtract 165 from 378.
Arrange the given numbers in columns and then follow these steps:
Step 1: Subtract the ones. Step 2: Subtract the tens.
8 ones – 5 ones = 3 ones 7 tens – 6 tens = 1 ten
Write 3 under ones column. Write 1 under tens column.
H T O H T O
3 7 8 3 7 8
– 1 6 5 – 1 6 5
3 1 3
Step 3: Subtract the hundreds. H T O
3 hundreds – 1 hundred = 2 hundreds 3 7 8
Write 2 under hundreds column. – 1 6 5
Thus, 378 – 165 = 213 2 1 3
Exercise 4.1
1. Subtract the following.
(a) H T O (b) H T O (c) H T O
3 5 6 5 6 7 4 6 8
– 2 3 4 – 1 4 3 – 2 5 6
