                                                   Exercise 4.3

          1. Find the difference.

                (a) Th H T O (b) Th H T O (c) Th H T O

                           5 7 4 8 6 3 8 6 4 8 8 5
                       – 3 5 2 5 – 2 1 5 2 – 1 4 3 5

          2. Write in columns and find the difference.

                (a) 2618 and 1506 (b) 5746 and 2434 (c) 8067 and 5015

               (d) 6785 and 4635 (e) 3470 and 4685 (f) 6718 and 7899

        Subtraction with Regrouping

Subtraction with regrouping for 4-digit numbers is same as that for 3-digit numbers
except for the fact that borrowing may start from thousands place if required.

              Let’s Attempt

        Example 1: Subtract 4968 from 7873.

Solution: Arrange the given numbers in columns and then follow these steps:

                          Step 1: Subtract the ones.

As we cannot subtract 8 ones from 3 ones, Th H T O
we borrow 1 ten from tens column and 6 13
                                     regroup the ones column as 7 8 7 3
                                                                                               – 4 9 6 8
                                     1 ten + 3 ones = 10 ones + 3 ones = 13 ones
                                                                                                                5
                                     Now, 13 ones – 8 ones = 5 ones

                                     Write 5 under ones column.

                          Step 2: Subtract the tens.
                                                                                                  Th H T O
In tens column, 7 tens become 6 tens after 6 13
                                     borrowing.
                                                                                                   7 8 7 3
                                       Now, 6 tens – 6 tens = 0 – 4 9 6 8

                                       Write 0 under tens column. 0 5
