Subtraction 51

Total number of persons who visited the exhibition = 8925

Thus, number of persons who visited the exhibition on Tuesday
                          = 8925 – 6005 = 2920

Fact-o-meter Solve the bracket first. Then, do other operation.
                             If we have numbers enclosed in Th H T O H T O

                             For example, 1 2 3 5 2 8 9

                             Solve (1235 – 946) + 136 – 9 4 6 + 1 3 6
                                                                         2 8 9 4 2 5

                                                   Exercise 4.7

          1. Solve the following:
                (a) 3415 + 5418 –1634 = ________ (b) 7108 – 5268 + 2103 = ________

                (c) 3073 + 2804 – 5355 = ________ (d) 7562 – 2874 + 1606 = ________

                (e) 4143 + 3443 – 1430 = ________ (f) 1214 – 5675 + 6273 = ________

          2. From the sum of 4097 and 4723, subtract 1796.

Step 2: Subtract 2860 from 3940. 3. There were 1875 passengers travelling in a train. Out of these 325 passengers

Th H T O got down and 826 passengers got in at a station. How many passengers are in the
 8 14 train now?
3 9 4 0 4. A fruit seller had 1426 bananas. He bought 1056 more bananas from the market and
 – 2 8 6 0 sold 1563 bananas. How many bananas are left with him?

        Estimating the Difference

Thus, 2375 + 1565 – 2860 = 1080 To quickly check the difference, we round off the numbers and subtract them. It can give
us a rough estimate whether our answer is correct or not.

              Let’s Attempt

Example 1: Estimate the difference of 78 and 52 to the nearest tens.

rounded to Estimated difference Actual difference
        Solution: 78 nearest tens 80 T O T O
