Word Problems
Let us learn how to solve word problems on subtraction with the help of some examples.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: There are 117896 persons in a city. 79792 of them are females. How many males
are in the city?
Solution: Total number of persons = 117896 L TTh Th H T O
Number of females = 79792 0 10 17
Number of males = 117896 – 79792 1 1 7 8 9 6
= 38104 – 7 9 7 9 2
There are 38104 males in the city. 3 8 1 0 4
Example 2: Sum of two numbers is 657923. If one number is 248457, find the other.
Solution: Sum of two numbers = 657923 L TTh Th H T O
One number = 248457 4 17 8 11 13
Other number = 657923 – 248457 6 5 7 9 2 3
= 409466 – 2 4 8 4 5 7
4 0 9 4 6 6
Exercise 2.6
1. Aruna had ` 85000 with her. She bought a computer system for ` 39850. How much amount
is now left with her?
2. Sum of two numbers is 68981. If one number is 27990, find the other.
3. What must be added to 6789 to get 78100? [Hint: Subtract 6789 from 78100]
4. Find the difference between the greatest and the smallest 5-digit numbers that can be
formed from the digits 6, 2, 8, 5, 0.
5. The price of a car is ` 486798 and that of a van is ` 300980. Which costs more and by how
much?
6. A man had 615600 bricks. He used 112345 bricks to make a house. How many bricks are
left now?
Addition and Subtraction Together
Whenever addition and subtraction are given together in an expression, first add and then
subtract.
But while solving the statement problem, we must follow the given sequence, that is, if we need
to subtract first, then first subtract and then add.
