Word Problems
Let us learn how to solve word problems on addition with the help of some examples.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: 17528 tiles are needed for tiling all the three floors of a house and 1689 tiles are
required for tiling the verandah. How many tiles are required in all?
Solution: Tiles required for all the floors = 17528 TTh Th H T O
Tiles required for the verandah = 1689 1 1 1
Total number of tiles required = 17528 + 1689 1 7 5 2 8
= 19217 + 1 6 8 9
Thus, 19217 tiles are needed in all. 1 9 2 1 7
Example 2: The total number of enrolments in all the schools of a district during a year was
223782 and during the next year, it was 331263. Find the total enrolments in both
the years.
Solution: Enrolments during first year = 223782 L TTh Th H T O
Enrolments during second year = 331263 1 1
Combined enrolments of the two years 2 2 3 7 8 2
= 223782 + 331263 = 555045 + 3 3 1 2 6 3
Thus, together in the two years, total number of 5 5 5 0 4 5
enrolments was 555045.
