P. 25
Addition and Subtraction 23
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Find the sum of 57412 and 32301.
Solution: TTh Th H T O
5 7 4 1 2 Addend
+ 3 2 3 0 1 Addend
8 9 7 1 3 Sum
Step 1: Arrange the digits of both numbers in columns as shown.
Step 2: Add the ones; 2 + 1 = 3 ones
Step 3: Add the tens; 1 + 0 = 1 ten
Step 4: Add the hundreds; 4 + 3 = 7 hundreds
Step 5: Add the thousands; 7 + 2 = 9 thousands
Step 6: Add the ten thousands; 5 + 3 = 8 ten thousands
Thus, the sum is 89713.
Example 2: Find the sum of 11340, 67235, 1003 and 21.
Solution: TTh Th H T O
Fact-o-meter
1 1 3 4 0 When we add two or more
6 7 2 3 5 numbers, then each number
1 0 0 3 is known as addend and the
+ 2 1 result obtained after addition
7 9 5 9 9 is called sum.
Thus, the sum is 79599.
Addition with Regrouping
As we regroup in the sum of 4-digit numbers, larger numbers also follow the same rule.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Add 43165 and 14576. Example 2: Add 567, 8901, 23645 and 78902.
Solution: TTh Th H T O Solution: L TTh Th H T O
1 1 2 3 1 1
4 3 1 6 5 5 6 7
+ 1 4 5 7 6 8 9 0 1
5 7 7 4 1 2 3 6 4 5
+ 7 8 9 0 2
Thus, the sum is 57741. 1 1 2 0 1 5
Thus, the sum is 112015.
