Addition and Subtraction 27
Subtraction without Regrouping
The rule to subtract large numbers is same as that for 4-digit numbers. To subtract the large
numbers, arrange the numbers in columns and then subtract starting from the ones place and
then moving towards the left one place after another.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Subtract 21607 from 68799. Example 2: Subtract 256321 from 897532.
Solution: TTh Th H T O Solution: L TTh Th H T O
6 8 7 9 9 Minuend 8 9 7 5 3 2 Minuend
– 2 1 6 0 7 Subtrahend – 2 5 6 3 2 1 Subtrahend
4 7 1 9 2 Difference 6 4 1 2 1 1 Difference
Thus, 68799 – 21607 = 47192 Thus, 897532 – 256321 = 641211
Subtraction with Regrouping
We already know how to regroup by borrowing for 4-digit numbers. Follow the same rule for
the subtraction of 5-digit and 6-digit numbers.
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Subtract 29589 from 68438. Example 2: Subtract 428304 from 541250.
Solution: TTh Th H T O Solution: L TTh Th H T O
5 17 13 12 18 3 10 12 4 10
6 8 4 3 8 5 4 1 2 5 0
– 2 9 5 8 9 – 4 2 8 3 0 4
3 8 8 4 9 1 1 2 9 4 6
Thus, 68438 – 29589 = 38849 Thus, 541250 – 428304 = 112946
Missing Digits in a Subtraction Sum
TTh Th H T O
We can find out the missing digits in the subtraction sum. 6 5 3 7
Let us find out the missing digits. – 2 1 2
Step 1: At ones place; 7 – 2 = 5 2 2 2
Step 2: At tens place; 3 – = 2 ⇒ 3 – 2 = 1
Step 3: At hundreds place; – 1 = 2 ⇒ 2 + 1 = 3 TTh Th H T O
6 5 3 3 7
Step 4: At thousands place; 5 – = 2 ⇒ 5 – 2 = 3
– 2 3 1 1 2
Step 5: At ten thousands place; 6 – 2 = 4 4 2 2 2 5
