Addition and Subtraction 25
4. Write the number which is
(a) 10050 more than 56989 (b) 12388 more than 36506
Properties of Addition
Let us learn the properties of addition.
Order Property of Addition
The sum of two numbers remains the same even if we change the order of the numbers.
For example, let us add 13816 and 2458.
13816 + 2458 = 16274 and 2458 + 13816 = 16274
Thus, 13816 + 2458 = 2458 + 13816
Grouping Property of Addition
When adding three or more numbers the numbers can be grouped in any way. The sum remains
the same in all cases.
For example, let us add 2367, 43787 and 24786.
(2367 + 43787) + 24786 = 46154 + 24786 = 70940
(2367 + 24786) + 43787 = 27153 + 43787 = 70940
2367 + (43787 + 24786) = 2367 + 68573 = 70940
Thus, (2367 + 43787) + 24786 = (2367 + 24786) + 43787 = 2367 + (43787 + 24786)
Property of Zero
When we add zero to a number, the sum is always the number itself.
For example, 53276 + 0 = 53276, 453243 + 0 = 453243
Adding 10, 100 and 1000
When we add 10 to a number, the digit in the tens place is increased by 1.
For example, 37673 + 10 = 37683 233456 + 10 = 233466
When we add 100 to a number, the digit in the hundreds place is increased by 1.
For example, 13567 + 100 = 13667 243456 + 100 = 243556
When we add 1000 to a number, the digit in thousands place is increased by 1.
For example, 38380 + 1000 = 39380 234567 + 1000 = 235567
Exercise 2.2
1. Fill in the blanks.
(a) 4734 + 2341 = 2341 + _______ (b) 32145 + _______ = 32145
(c) 72810 + 0 = _______ (d) 42810 + 100 = _______
