Addition and Subtraction 29
4. Find the difference and check your answer.
(a) 41279 – 24314 (b) 87566 – 57388 (c) 3344 – 2166
(d) 6189 – 1166 (e) 4512 – 1401 (f) 65344 – 35166
Properties of Subtraction
Let us learn the properties of subtraction.
The order of numbers in a subtraction cannot be changed.
For example, 24643 – 256 is not the same as 256 – 24643.
Subtracting a number from itself gives a difference 0.
For example, 59848 – 59848 = 0; 38730 – 38730 = 0
When we subtract zero from a number, the difference is the number itself.
For example, 54468 – 0 = 54468; 89312 – 0 = 89312
When we subtract 10 from a number, the digit in the tens place is decreased by 1.
For example, 68435 – 10 = 68425
When we subtract 100 from a number, the digit in the hundreds place is decreased by 1.
For example, 345675 – 100 = 345575
When we subtract 1000 from a number, the digit in the thousands place is decreased by 1.
For example, 854364 – 1000 = 853364

(e) 73456 – 73456 = ________ (f) 978684 – 1000 = ________
2. Find the subtrahend in the following.
(a) 34567 – = 34557
(b) 756398 – = 756388
(c) 998694 – = 998694
(d) 12345 – = 11345
