Just like humans share news and information with each other,
computers can also share information. To share information,
computers need to be connected together. A group of two or
more computers connected together that enables sharing of
information between them is called a Computer Network or
simply a Network.
WHAT IS INTERNET?
Internet stands for International Network. It is the
network of computers that connects millions of
computers together, spawning the entire world. It is
the global storehouse of information which enables
a user to access information and communicate with
others easily and quickly.
HISTORY OF INTERNET
The concept of computer networks was born in 1969. The Department of Defense,
USA, set up the first network of computers called ARPANET (Advanced Research
Projects Agency Network). It was developed to share information about research and
development in areas of science and technology among scientists all over the USA.
Later on, it was granted access to the common public and educational institutions.
Over time, the network grew bigger and bigger, and connected computers all over the
world, leading to the present-day Internet.
Advantages of Internet
The Internet is a storehouse of information on almost every topic in the world. Some
advantages of the Internet are:
1. Most of the information on the Internet is available free of cost.
2. It removes distance and time constraints. Thus, a computer in India can share
information with a computer in the USA at any time of the day.
