Connect with the World using Internet and its Applications
The Internet is world’s largest publically accessible network of computer system consisting of billions of
computers spread across the world. It is also known as a network of networks as it connects the millions of
smaller networks which belongs to a country, organisation, institution, etc.
Internet was started initially in 1969 by the US defence department and was named ARPAnet (Advanced
Research Projects Agency Network). It was later joined by other universities and researchers resulting into the
quick expansion of this network. The actual growth of the Internet started in 1990s with the introduction of
World Wide Web (WWW) facility, as during that time period, more and more people started using this network
to access an ever increasing pool of information. Today, it is used by individuals, companies and institutions for
many different purposes.
Uses of Internet
We can do a lot of things using the Internet. Some of them are as follows:
Entertainment
Internet is a famous entertainment tool these days. It is used to download and play games, download movies,
songs, etc.
Online Shopping
We can book tickets for a movie, train or, fl ight using the Internet. We can also purchase and sell items from
anywhere across the world and pay bills from home. Some of the popular shopping websites are:

Myntra (www.myntra.com)
Searching for Information
Internet is used to get information on any topic. We can look for the latest news, match scores, cooking recipes and
many more things using a search engine. Search engines are websites that search information for us according
to the terms we specify. The most popular search engine is Google (www.google.com).
Online Chatting
This facility of Internet allows us to exchange text/voice/video messages with others instantly. Some popular
online chatting websites are Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger etc.
Email
An email (electronic mail) is a message sent from one computer to another computer. There are many websites
which provide email facility. For example, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, etc. Email is faster than the old traditional
mail. It is convenient and used to send documents, images and videos as an attachment.
E-cards
An e-card is an electronic greeting card that can be sent to anyone across the world using Internet. We need to
choose a card and write the e-mail address of the sender and the receiver. Some of the popular e-card websites
are:
