and sustain the livelihood of local people. This form of tourism is also called ecological tourism, nature
travel or responsible tourism.
Clean Transportation: Driving alone in a car is environmentally and economically ineffi cient. Walking
or riding a bike for short trips is good for health and the environment too! Clean transportation means
less dependency on fuel for vehicles, trains, etc. When we choose alternative transportation methods like
carpooling, train, or other public transport which use hybrid or electric energy, then we become a part of
clean transportation sector.
Waste Management: The waste to be managed includes all forms of matter-gaseous, liquid, solid and
radioactive matter from waste materials. Throwing something away means losing the chance to reuse
materials and can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions from landfi lls. If we recycle, reuse and reduce
the waste materials in a proper way, it reduces the impact of landfi lls as well as the demand on our natural
resources.
Water Management: Billions of people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water or improved
sanitation services. Population growth worsens the problem. Take small steps like water recycling, rain
water harvesting, implementing rain gardens, water purifi cation and storm water planning, etc. These
have made the water management sector an important component for a green economy.
Industry and Manufacturing: Industry and manufacturing are main source of employment and economic
growth in many countries. These industries directly discharge their waste water and solid wastes and
contribute to huge environment pollution and contamination. Businesses that have sustainability plans,
use eco-labels and invest in renewable energy for a green economy should be encouraged.

Knowledge Plus
A green consumer is someone who is very concerned about the environment and, therefore, only purchases
products that are environment-friendly or eco-friendly. Products with little or no packaging, products
made from natural ingredients and products that are made without causing pollution are all examples of
eco-friendly products.
Benefits of Green Economy
There are three major benefi ts of green economy: Environmental benefi ts, economic benefi ts and social benefi ts.
Environmental Benefits
Green economy benefi ts environment in many ways:
Sustainable management of natural assets and resources.
Reduction in fossil fuel dependency.
Reduced greenhouse gases and other emissions.
Reduction in air and water emissions.
Better adaptation to climate change and resilience to natural disasters.
Improved environmental quality.
Reduction in loss of biodiversity.
Economic Benefits
The clean energy sector is the means of economic benefi ts. It has the potential to deliver on both environmental
and economic objectives of the green economy.
Increased economic growth and employment.
Reduced poverty and inequality.
