Environment Protection and Conservation
Environment protection is the practice of protecting the environment at individual, organizational or governmental
levels for the benefi t of natural environment. The pollution of environment is one of the major concerns today.
The Environment Protection Act was passed by Ministry of Environment, with the objective of providing for
the protection of the environment. It empowers the central government to establish authorities charged with the
mandate of preventing environmental pollution in all its forms and to tackle specifi c environmental problems
that are peculiar to different parts of the country.
Here are some ways to protect environment:
Plant trees because trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse
gas.
Walk or ride a bicycle to work or to run errands instead of
driving a car or a motorcycle, which uses gasoline and also
emits carbon monoxide into the air.
Grow an indoor herb garden in your kitchen window and
spend time in your garden.
Use less fertilizer on your lawn. When it rains, excess fertilizer
runs off into storm sewers and pollutes streams.
Cut down your energy consumption by using CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) or LED (Light Emitting
Diode) bulbs.
Turn off your home gadgets when not in use.
Never pour anything— especially waste oil or leftover lawn chemicals into a storm drain. It will end up in
the nearest stream.
When shopping, look for the recyclable symbol on packaging.
Products used for cleaning are generally liquid wastes that are to
be sent down the drain.
Do not throw garbage on the streets, public places or in
water.
Practice the three R’s— Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Use recycled products. It is a good way to help the
environment.
Encourage people to reuse things and reduce waste.
