Green Skills
Green skills means the skills for green economy. This includes technical skills, knowledge, values and attitudes
needed in the workforce to develop and support sustainable social, economic and environmental outcomes in
business, industry and community.
Developing countries like India initiate skill development programs to create trained persons for the green
industry. With the Skill India Mission of the Government of India, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and
Climate Change has started the Green Skill Development Programme {GSDP). It aims to target a large number
of people who will be trained as per the needs of the green sector. The skill development program run by
the National Skill Development Corporation India (NSDC) works towards creating skill-based employment
opportunity in India. Green skill development programme contributes to the skill development programs by
making the people more aware of their environment.
These are the aims of the Green Skills Development Programme (GSDPS}:
To train green skilled workers with technical knowledge and commitment to conserve and preserve the
environment.
To generate new jobs for green skilled workers who will help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity,
reduce energy consumption and minimise waste and pollution.
To preserve or restore environmental quality so that it lasts for future generations.
Some of the fi elds covered under Green Skills Development Programme are:
Sewage Treatment Plant
Waste Management
Water Budgeting
Forest Management
Wildlife Management
Conservation of River Dolphins
Livelihood Generation:
Pollution Monitoring (Air/Water/Soil)
Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP), and Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP)
Bamboo Management
Green Jobs
A green job is employment in any industry that contributes in preserving environmental quality in that sector
and allowing for sustainable development. A green job helps to protect ecosystem and biodiversity and reduces
energy, materials and water consumption through sustainable development strategies. A rise in green buildings
and energy effi ciency is increasing the demand for architects, engineers, workers etc.
