Let’s Learn Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense shows an action that is continuous or going on in the
present time. The -ing form of the verb and the verbs is, are and am are used as helping

verbs in the present continuous tense.

Read the following sentences.

I am singing a song. He is buying a bicycle.

You are going to Mumbai. They are learning English.

In the above sentences, the verbs am singing, is buying, are going and are learning
show the actions going on in the present continuous tense.

Formation of Present Continuous Tense

We use the -ing form of the main verb after the helping verb (is/are/am).

subject + helping verb (is/are/am) + root form of a verb + -ing + ...

We simply add -ing to most of the verbs.

cook – cooking do – doing rain – raining drink – drinking

If a verb ends in -e, we drop the -e and add -ing:
