Sentence Formation in Present Continuous Tense
¾ To make a positive sentence, we add the helping verbs is, am or are and the -ing form of the
main verb.

¾ To make a negative sentence, we add not after is, am or are + present participle form of the
main verb.
Read the sentence given below.
• They are not leaving the city until next month.
¾ To form an interrogative sentence, we start the question with is, am or are before the subject
followed by the present participle form of the main verb.

Past Continuous Tense
The past continuous tense is used:
¾ to indicate an action that was going on in the past.
Read the sentence given below.
• The boy was dancing alone.
¾ to say that something happened while an action was going on.

• It was nine o’clock when I was writing the letter.

¾ To make a positive sentence, we add the helping verbs was or were before the present
