Sentence Formation in Simple Present Tense
¾ To make a positive sentence, we add -s, -es or -ies to the root form of a verb when the
subject is singular. However, we do not add -s, -es or -ies to the root form of a verb when
the subject is plural.
Read the sentence given below.
• The train leaves at 8 a.m.
• We play every day.
¾ To make a negative sentence, we use do not or does not before the root form of a verb.
Read the sentence given below.
• The train does not leave at 10.
• We do not go by bus.
¾ To make an interrogative sentence, we use do or does followed by the subject and the root
form of a verb.
Read the sentence given below.
• Does Arun travel by train?
• Do they come here regularly?
Simple Past Tense
The simple past tense is used:
¾ to talk about an action that took place once in the past.
Read the sentence given below.
• They went to New York for a holiday.
¾ to talk about an action that took place regularly in the past.

• We always enjoyed visiting our cousins.
¾ to talk about things that were true for some time in the past.
