We use but to join sentences with different meanings.

I want to go to the seaside. My family wants to go to the mountains.

We use or to show a choice.

I do not eat fish. I do not eat meat.

We use yet to join contrasting ideas.
He is a footballer. His favourite sport is tennis.

He is a footballer, yet his favourite sport is tennis.

We use so to show a consequence.
l I was not feeling well. I came early.

l I was not feeling well, so I came early.

Subordinating Conjunctions

The main function of subordinating conjunctions is to connect a dependent clause to a main
clause.

They include words such as although, though, still, because, as, if, unless, since, until, and before.

We use although or though to show a contrast.
l It was raining. We walked home slowly.

Although it was raining, we walked home slowly.

l She was not well. She showed up for practice.

Though she was not well, she showed up for practice.

We use because or as to join two sentences when one of them says something and the other gives
a reason for it.
He came first in the class. He is very intelligent.

He came first in the class because he is very intelligent.
l He knew he was in the woods. He could hear the sound of animals.

He knew he was in the woods as he could hear the sound of animals.

We use if or unless when there is a condition.
l The class ended early. I would reach home on time.
If the class ended early, I would reach home on time.

I sleep with the window open. It is really cold.
l
I sleep with the window open as it is really cold.
