Mahatma Gandhi is known as the greatest Indian leader of the
20th century. He has been regarded as the greatest man of the

millennium. He was a great saint and national leader. He lived
a simple life just like a saint. He was a true worshipper of non-
          violence.

Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat state
in a rich family. He was very shy and reserved kind of child to begin

with. His mother inculcated in him almost all the good qualities—
truth, honesty, politeness, punctuality and regularity.

Having passed his higher secondary at the age of seventeen,
Gandhiji went to England for higher studies and completed

his Bar-at-Law there. Having returned to India, he started
practising as an advocate. Soon, he had to go to South Africa
in connection with a legal case there.

Seeing the bad conditions of the Indians in South Africa and brutality of the Britishers to them, he
started a movement there. He was beaten and jailed several times but stood firm and carried on

his movement in a peaceful way. His weapon was Satyagraha (Insistence on Truth). At last, he was
successful in getting many rights for the Indians and the Africans living there.

In 1915, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India and took the lead of the Freedom Movement in his
own hands. He sermonized against untouchability and did a lot for Hindu-Muslim Unity. He urged
the people to give up foreign things and use Indian things only. He had to go to prisons several

times. At last, he was able to win freedom for India in 1947 without any war. He came to be called
the Father of the Nation. The British had to grant independence to India without any war. Indian
people called him Bapu out of respect and affection. On 30th January,1948, Mahatma Gandhi was

          shot dead.
