My dear Mother
My dear Hema
Usually, a friend is addressed as ‘Dear Rithika and not ‘Dear Friend.’ A comma is always used after
the salutation.
3. Body
The body of the letter consists three parts:
(a) The beginning sentence, which could be any of the following:
I was delighted to receive your letter.
l
Thank you very much for your invitation.
l
You have not written for long.
l
I’m writing after a long time.
l
(b) The message which is the central part of the letter could be an answer to a letter received
or a letter on whatever topic one wants to write. The language must be simple, readable
with short sentences and should be conversational.
(c) The end part of the body is the closing, which can even be any of the given:
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
l
With love...
l
Please remember me to...
l
With affectionate regards...
l
Please give my regards...
l
4. Subscription or the Closing of the Letter
It depends on the writer’s relationship with the receiver. These closing lines are also written on the
left-hand side of the page. A capital letter begins the closing line and a comma is used to end it. In
the closing line, ‘Yours’ is a possessive here and uses no apostrophe.
To close relations, one writes:
Your lovingly,
l
Your affectionately,
l
Your affectionate father/mother/uncle/aunt/son/daughter/brother/sister,
l
To friends, one writes
Sincerely yours,
Yours sincerely,
To teachers, one writes
Your obedient pupil,
l
Your obediently,
l
