My Favourite Neighbour
My family lives in an apartment in Karol Bagh in New Delhi. There are four families living on our
floor. We all know and mostly get along well with one another, but my favourite neighbour is Mr
Mathur.
Although Mr Mathur was born and brought up in Bengaluru, he has lived in Delhi for so many
years. To hear him one can think that he is born and brought up in Delhi itself.
Mr Mathur is about thirty-five and has two sons, the younger one is being of my age. What I like
about Mr Mathur is that he never argues with anyone, even if he disagrees with someone. He is
very modest, calm, and clearheaded about what he wishes to say. He listens to the other side
patiently, yet when someone wants to bully him, he never takes it lying down. With a humorous
sentence or two, he lightens up the atmosphere but makes his point all right.
There have been occasions when, because of shortage of water, tempers were frayed. Everyone
sat at home fretting and fuming; but Mr Mathur went across to the nearest Jal Nigam office, put in
a complaint, called for two water tankers and brought a smile on everyone’s face.
Whenever we are playing downstairs in the building compound, only my father and Mr Mathur
find time to throw a ball to us. Others come and go without noticing us. I am really glad to be living
so close to Mr Mathur. He is the best neighbour ever I have seen.
